A Beacon Lost to the Flames: Honoring Altadena Community Church

By UCC Coalition | January 10, 2025

A Community of Love, Resilience, and Hope

It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news that Altadena Community Church (ACC), United Church of Christ, is among several houses of worship that lost their buildings to the Eaton wildfire. This cherished congregation, renowned for its unwavering dedication to peace, justice, and radical acceptance, has been a beacon of hope and love in the Altadena community for over 80 years.

The loss of the church building is compounded by the heartbreak of many members losing their homes in the fire. Altadena Community Church’s legacy of widening the circle of welcome and love reminds us that the church is more than just a building—it is a community united by faith, compassion, and service.

Founded in 1940, ACC became one of the first churches in the United Church of Christ to declare itself Open and Affirming, welcoming all people, including those in the LGBTQ+ community, into the full life of the church. For decades, its mission has been to embrace diversity, foster peace, and serve neighbors in need.

Altadena Community Church has been a cornerstone of the local community, hosting a vibrant food pantry in collaboration with neighboring congregations, nurturing the next generation through its preschool, and offering a home for music and community programs.

As we hold this cherished congregation in our hearts, we also honor their spirit of resilience. Like so many other faith communities affected by the wildfires, they will regroup and continue their ministry, rooted in their mission of love, justice, and service.
