Twenty-seven years ago today, Brandon Teena (December 12, 1972 – December 31, 1993) was attacked and murdered in a small town in Nebraska. Teena was murdered because he was transgender, and his two friends – Phillip DeVine and Lisa Lambert – were killed to cover up the crime. After his death, Teena was misgendered in the media and by his mother, who insisted that his obituary and headstone bear his natal name.
