Today…January 4th

On January 4, 1964, Dot Marie Jones was born in California, where she grew up. Jones is best known these days for her portrayal of Coach Sheldon Beiste on the television show Glee, where she portrayed a transgender man. One of the pivotal scenes in her not-without-controversy role featured a transgender choir backing Alex Newell singing, “I Know Where I’ve Been” from the musical Hairspray. Many felt Glee should have cast a transgender actor in the role, but many others felt that in spite of that, Jones was very respectful of transgender experiences. Jones still lives in California with her spouse, Bridgett Casteen.

She speaks of the impact her role has had on her personally and on others in the interview below.
