Jeanne d’Arc, or Joan of Arc in English (1412 – 1431), was born on around 1412 in Domremy, France. Some historians have listed her birth date as January 6th of that year, but there are no records that indicate the exact date. Like many modern transgender and queer warrior leaders, she was ahead of her time and that led to the accusation of witchcraft due to heresy – including dressing like a man. That means she was killed because others did not understand her gender identity. She was also an important model for faith through incredible trial.
“Joan believed strongly in God AND in cross-dressing. She insisted that God wanted her to wear men’s clothes, making her what today can be called “queer,” “lesbian” or “transgender.” says Kittredge Cherry.
