At this year’s National Gathering, Rev. Derek Terry issued a challenge to all Open and Affirming churches: It’s time to move beyond safe statements and symbolic gestures. It’s time to A.C.T OUT.
A.C.T OUT stands for Advocacy, Community, and Transformation—and it’s the next chapter of our movement. It’s how we move from affirmation to action in a moment when white supremacist nationalism is rising, trans and queer lives are under attack, and religion is being weaponized to do harm.
We’re not asking every church to do the same thing. But we are asking every church to do something.
Some will march. Some will teach. Some will host vigils, speak out at city council, offer shelter, or organize for policy change. Whatever it is—name it, claim it, and commit to it as part of your ONA covenant.
We’re building a national team to co-create what A.C.T OUT looks like: toolkits, trainings, campaigns, and strategies that help churches show up boldly and faithfully.
